Speaking up is better than Resisting (poem)

Chulakaran, is a hair shaving ceremony,
done for all kids, between age 1 and 3,
in my home state, but, only for boys in
part of India, where my husband grew up.

So, it was not performed for my daughter,
but my father-in-law wanted it to be done,
for my son, which to me, felt like unfair,
and I made sure that it did not take place.

Recently, my father-in-law was expressing,
his joy on attending someone's ceremony,
I felt bad that I had deprived him of joy,
and wished that I had voiced what I wanted.
